![]() If you've been looking for a chat client that plays nice with other chat services, Adium is an excellent choice on the Mac. Overall, despite some file-sharing quirks, Adium X is a must-download for those looking to connect with multiple services. Under the hood, the program shares the same open-source core as multiplatform client Pidgin. Recent updates have improved cross-service support (both in terms of security and performance), and the app continues to offer extensive options for customization, with a wide range of sounds, themes, colors, and other tweaks-including support for Growl, if you want to keep up with chats when you're not in Adium. The client supports tabbed browsing, encrypted messaging, and you can transfer files to your buddies, though it can be hit or miss depending on what service you're using. The interface is smooth and lean, fitting in well with the Mac OS. Part of what made the original Adium so attractive was the multitude of IM service options, and that still forms the core appeal of this client. It supports multiple services, including AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Facebook, Windows Live, and Google Chat. I don't know specifically why IPV6 should cause you trouble (mine is on), but it seems to occasionally happen. One of the most popular and customizable third-party clients in the multiservice chat category for Mac continues to impress. Those Windows computers are 95% likely to be configured to have IPV6 off already, and that's another source of possible differences. IPV6 is still very rarely used, and you don't need it, and occasionally things get screwed up because of it. From there, in the pull down, select IPV6 OFF, and see if this helps. One more thing to put on your list to try after those two things you're going to try (HTTP and turning NAT off), if those don't work: Go to System Preferences -> Network -> select your interface -> TCP/IP -> Configure IPV6. So simply asking Adium to allow you to create your own room on the Yahoo severs, can't be done. Yahoo had a court suit brought against them because users (perverts) opened their own rooms and incised young into them. If this is what your asking about then this is a yahoo issue not Adium. Otherwise, it's still quite possible there's something fishy with your network setup. Yahoo did away with the so called 'user rooms'. If they do, and you see no downside, just leave well enough alone. So it works on almost any computer on the internet. HTTP is the protocol that web browsers use to get web pages. But they are somewhat more demanding of the way the internet connection is set up than HTTP is. Those protocols are a really good fit to MSN's needs. Unless you play online games or something that requires it?Īs for that HTTP option, what it does is this: MSN is built to use specific protocols to talk to its servers. Log in to the website, assuming it's possible and appropriate to do so. Issues with a cached version of the page you're viewing could be causing 403 Forbidden issues. If you know how to disable NAT, sure, I guess so. If you operate the website in question, and you want to prevent 403 errors in these cases, enable directory browsing in your web server software. The other thing you might try is to go in Adium, Preferences, Edit the MSN account, go to the options tab, and then check the "connect via HTTP" box, and see if that helps. If you still get frequent drops in this configuration, then the suspect is something in OS X's network settings. ![]() If you do this (I don't know exactly how with this router, unfortunately), and you turn off OS X's firewall, it should be very nearly as if you have no router. Your router should have a "DMZ" mode where it basically gives access to every port (and the IP address) associated with your connection on the outside world, to one computer. ![]() What I would suggest is start from the really basics. And if the computer is a Windows computer, and it's plugged in, it works fine on the same router with the same settings, but not if it is a Mac. so you have a single wired computer connected to the router, and right now you are using NAT.
